Lol NPC's are called such because they are not played, therefore they are merely cannon fodder in most RP's. Alright so first we have to figure out what it is you know.
Do you know the basic rules of a RP? Do you know how to make a template?
And also for the Q&A portion of this class, are there any initial questions you have about something you read or heard that didn't make sense or whatever?

Alright sorry this has taken so long, I've been super busy and I have just managed to force myself to sit down and work on this no matter how many times me siblings bother me. So here I post this for you... Make use of it ^^
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Alright then we shall start from the basics and work our way up. The basics shall start with rules!!! Yes rules can be annoying but as everyone knows they are there for a reason, and with RP's it is a very good reason!
So first a look at some RP rules and terminology, some you might already know but I will go over it anyways just to make sure I don't leave anything out.
PP = Power Play A rather hated action, it happens when one person takes control of events outside of their character, especially when those events coincide with another characters actions. It can be as grand as claiming that one character said something that they did not, or claiming that the plot has suddenly changed. It is more commonly done with characters so you need to make sure that you read posts carefully and respond accordingly. Always make sure that you only ever say that something has been said if it has actually been said. No making another person get hit by an attack, or make them follow you to any place or agree to any path.
GM = God Mode Another rather hated action, this one entails God-like characters or actions. Basically it is when you say that attacks "always miss" or your attacks "always hit". This gives players no possible way to have a fair fight. Fights in RP's are not done with dice or computer drawn numbers, it is all about fairness between the players and knowing that they will do what is right... And also knowing that if they don't do what is right that you will bring the Mods down on them and force them to behave! So always make sure that you are hit when you should be and that you wait for the person to make a response before you attack again or claim that the attack made contact.
Template This is what characters are made on, they consist of the information one needs to better interact with your character, as well as allow the RP maker to decide whether a character needs to be modified for the RP or if it is completely wrong for the RP. The info within them can be very basic or very detailed, usually people don't ask for too much detail, any more then the necessary stuff is usually up to you. However some RP's will place in the rules that a certain section needs to be a certain length. In more complex RP's you might find that the criteria for what needs to be on a template are much higher, they might want a whole lot more info or for your template to have a certain amount of info for it to even be considered, these can be much harder to deal with if you are not up to that writing level, which is usually what these people are trying to make sure you know. Also some positions in a RP might need a more detailed template, a regular character is going to need less clarification then say the main villain responsible for the deaths of millions. If making a template for a character like that you want to make sure that your template isn't GM but also that it lives up to the power that the character is supposed to have.
IC = In Character This refers to what the character is saying or doing, in many RP's you will find a thread for the IC and a thread for the OOC (see next paragraph). Some sites merge the two and people just state "IC:" when they are going to say something as their character as opposed to as themselves. It is important to make sure you have the two separate or else there can be some confusion, and if a thread is for only IC and nothing else be sure to abide by that or you may be booted from the RP.
OOC = Out Of Character This refers to what you as a person are saying and not your character. This includes the posting of templates, as well as any questions about the RP, any plot questions, or verification about an event that another member posted about. There is often a thread for this that is separate then the IC and as I said before you must make sure that the two don't mix together. If the two are mixed together in one thread you have to make sure that the two thoughts and comments are kept separate and labeled otherwise you end up with some truly confused characters and people.
NPC This means Non Playable Character. These are also known as cannon fodder!!!! Anyone can control them so long as they stay in the personality and history (if one has been established by another). And also the little people that run in terror from the monster? They are NPCs... They can die and no one will care. The other members might help. Just make sure tat if the NPC has been used by another or many, that you don't just shoot them, they might be useful... So watch it or another member might just claim they lived. And if the creator of the RP verifies that said NPC is useful then the GM would be acceptable. So just make sure that your posts don't end up being full of NPCs, you make use of NPCs, and don't needlessly kill off ones that could become useful and you should be fine.
Machine Gun Posting This is when two or three people post back and forth to each other without taking a break for others to see the posts and reply. It is discouraged because it damages the flow of time and makes it difficult for others to jump in. Usually people ask for one or two posts a week, if you can manage one a day that is fine as long as the plot is progressing and people are posting as well. Usually the preference is posted in the sign-up thread but if it isn't then try to gauge your replies based upon the number of replies made by others. Also, if there are only three to four people left in the RP then obviously this rule becomes null and void.
Literacy This is actually sometimes a rule on RP's. Oftentimes members will join and have no literacy at all, this is annoying to people who basically have to decode the post that was made by them. Now this by no means implies that one must have perfect grammar or writing, it just means that your posts have to be easily understood by people. This is usually directed to those that write in partial L33T or just omit half the letters in a sentence. As long as your sentences are legible, coherent, and make sense, you should be fine.
Romance Okay, shockingly this is in fact a rule on many RP's. Sadly it is a necessary rule, no one wants to be doing a basic Kingdom Hearts RP and then read about two characters having explicit How are the baby created?. Often it will tell in the RP what the rating is for it, the rating just like i movies or games will tell you just how much romance is allowed. Now just because it is PG or PG-13 does not mean that two characters cannot be in a serious relationship, however it needs to not be... Well detailed, same with movies, it just has to be written the right way and the ratings change. Just make sure that if you do have your character fall in love with someone that you follow the specific RP's guidelines for romance. On RP's that have no mention of this, it is usually safe to stick with a PG-13 rating for romance unless you are told otherwise (you can always ask the creator of the RP).
Character Limit A rule for a reason. Some RP's will state how many characters you can have, this is because often people will join with like four characters and then not be able to keep up with all of them, also if there is a certain number to a group then more slots are taken away from members who might have otherwise joined. Usually this number is reasonable or might be simply the creator's preference. If for whatever reason you feel that you can take on another character past the limit, always ask the creator if it is alright BEFORE posting your template. Oftentimes if you have proven that you can keep up with the characters you have and also you have a reason for wanting another (plot idea, not boredom) the creator might let you have another with no problem.
Canon Characters This rule only applies in a Canon RP. In a Canon RP there will sometimes be Canon characters, offspring, or weapons. Many RP's will have restrictions on this stuff (some of which should be obvious but still) and it usually has to do with the coherency of the plot, or the characters involved. For example, say you are in a FF RP, one that is set 120 years after the events of FFVII... Well obviously Cloud is not making an appearance, and if you want to show up with the Buster blade you had better have a good explanation of how you got it. Similarly if you are going to be Cloud's great grand-kid, you had better have a pretty good grasp on your families history and how it will tie into the plot. Some RP creators simply don't want to put up with this hassle and so just ban them all together from the RP, some will allow them depending on the plot, some also will require them for the RP to be made. Always check the rules for the RP to figure it out, and also if it is a Canon RP and it is not mentioned, ask before making a Canon character.
Rules READ THEM!!!! Even if you are sure of what they will say, even if every time you are right, ALWAYS read the rules. Sometimes there will be something unique to a RP, or a clever little trick. These tricks include saying "if you plan to join, please put *insert word or phrase here* at the top of your template." This is to make sure that you have read the rules, anyone who doesn't put it at the beginning of the template is the one who didn't read the rules and they are denied entrance often. So take the 15 secs and just read the rules each time.
Have Fun Yes it is a rule. People sometimes take things too seriously, it is a RP and meant to allow people to escape reality and have fun, don't be a downer. Always have fun and try to be considerate of others, respect each other and the other characters and you will be fine. Just remember to have fun, or don't bother joining the RP.
I learned all the above.
PP: Something you do that is not in the course of the play. And it is often disliked by other players and even liable to get rejected from the play.
GM: Being a superior character, which is not liked by many. And also will get the player to get rejected from the play.
Template: This is what we see at the begging of the play, and before we even start. Often made by the owner of the play and must be filled to understand the playing character's history and background.
IC: It is not me that is talking there, it is the character I made that is talking. Depending on the character type, this character can vary it style of talking; Vulgar and detesting character; nice and caring character; neutral and mysterious character.
What ever can be said by that character is just for the character only and not the creator's personality.
OOC: This is us, we can discuss anything about the game, the storyline and what ever else that's needed to be discussed can be discussed here. But this is a thread discussion about the affiliate and official thread were the play is held.
NPC: It is a character that is just there for the story. It can be the blacksmith, carpenter or even the Mayor's maid. These charcter are not important in the stories development. But some of them are deemed important, as such character might hold an important string to the story. === Am I right so far?
The rest are self explanatory.
What else needed to be done.
Yeah you have it all right so far.
What comes next is Lesson 2! How to make a template!
So templates on average have a base look to them:
Name: Age: Gender: Appearance: Personality: Weapon(s)/ Power(s): Bio: Other:
However more specific RP's will want more specific information, for instance a RP of Persona would include you Persona and it's powers and abilities. A RP of Percy Jackson would include your Godly parent, as well as any traits you got from them. It also changes even more if you RP as a different race such as Elf, Demon, Animal, Mermaid, Faerie and so on and so forth. But in general this is basically what you will find.
Any questions so far?
Actually it is still part of Lesson 2, you must wait before we move onto the next lesson... I cram a lot into one lesson so there aren't to many of them ^^;
Alright, now that you know what a template is, let us see if you can make one! Make me a template for a RP. The RP will be FF based, in or around the FFVII timeline, no canon, only original. No canon tie-ins, they have met none of the canons and they are not related to them. It can happen in the past, present, or future of the world, your choice of which. Template base is as follows:
Name: Age: Gender: Appearance: Personality: Materia (Limit of 5): Weapon: Bio: Other:
Post it when you are finished.
Alright you asked about how to do an appearance:
Physical Appearance: With her grey eyes Breanna has a tendency to unnerve people, this ordinarily would not be true but coupled with her raven black hair and very light complexion it does have an unnerving effect. She doesn't smile a whole lot as she is usually too busy with something else to even bother. Her complexion isn't actually too light but her hair and clothing choice usually makes her appear paler then she actually is.
She wears a pair of black cotton pants underneath a grey skirt. The skirt is layered but arranged so that she can sit down, or even ride a horse with ease, as the layers part easily for such things making mobility easy. She wears a black long sleeved cotton shirt, underneath a looser short sleeved grey blouse. She also has a long grey cloak that she always wears; it reaches all the way down to her boots and has a full hood that almost completely obscures her face.
She might not look it since not much of her skin shows but she is actually pretty strong. She isn't obviously strong, in fact she looks to be rather thin overall but looks can most definitely be deceiving.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is the one I had written for my template on KG. Some people will accept a picture and in that case you can use photobucket to find a pic of some anime person that looks close enough for your purposes. Some people require that if you use a picture that you also give a written paragraph of the stuff not shown in the picture or that is different. Some places don't even allow pictures and only want written appearances. It usually states which they want in the template or rules.
Nothing too technical in terminology is needed unless it has to do with the RP storyline or is require (which again would be stated). Most people just want what they usually wear as well as what they look like and any other distinguishing things about their appearance (such as a huge scar across their face).
